Dark Matter Empower is a Loan Origination product from Constellation Software. MortgageTechReview scores Dark Matter Empower 4.5 out of 5.0, ranking Dark Matter Empower #2 of the 32 products tracked in Loan Origination Software, as of August 11, 2026. The second most-used origination platform in mortgage. Black Knight divested it to Constellation Software's Perseus Operating Group in September 2023, to satisfy FTC concerns over the ICE merger. Rebranded Dark Matter Technologies under CEO Rich Gagliano with roughly 1,300 employees. Sold alongside AIVA, its AI virtual assistant, and the Exchange service network.

Where it wins
- Task-based rather than linear workflow. Multiple processes run concurrently with minimal lender intervention. That is architecturally different from most competitors, and better for complex production environments.
- The divestiture was arguably the best thing to happen to this product. Under Black Knight it sat behind servicing technology; it is now the sole focus of a company built around it.
- AIVA is a mature AI assistant with real tenure, not a 2025 bolt-on. The automation story now extends to auditable AI inside the LOS.
- Constellation is a long-term holder by design across more than 800 subsidiaries, so the.
- question is unusually settled.
- Direct beneficiary of the Encompass SDK retirement, and actively courting lenders reconsidering their platform.
Where it falls short
- Built for complex, high-volume production. A small or mid-size lender will not use enough of it to justify the cost or the implementation.
- Constellation's operating model prioritizes retention and margin over aggressive product investment. That is a strength for stability and a legitimate question for roadmap pace.
- The brand is still young. Dark Matter now runs a second LOS alongside Empower, plus legacy Mortgage Builder. Confirm which platform you are being sold.
- No published pricing.
Why it scores 4.5
Scored on the Loan Origination Systems weight profile. The number shows where it sits in this category. It rests on evidence anyone can check, including the vendor's own record. The weights →
Production impact
25% of scoreThe platform moves teams from doing to reviewing. Work is task-based rather than linear, so several processes run at once with minimal lender intervention, and automation routes exceptions to a human for sign-off. AIVA covers document classification, income verification, asset verification and post-close quality control, the tasks that consume licensed underwriter capacity, which is the binding constraint in enterprise origination. That is architecturally different from most competitors. No independently verified throughput figures are published.
Functionality and depth
20% of scoreEmpower carries the depth of a system built for the country’s largest originators. The rules engine drives exception-based workflow at production scale, and a developer platform with open APIs means a large lender extends the system itself instead of queuing behind the vendor, where competitors treat every configuration as a services engagement. Point of sale, Elevate servicing for credit unions and community banks, a partner marketplace and an intelligence layer sit alongside. A small lender does not use enough of it.
Integrations and ecosystem
25% of scoreExchange is the differentiator. Instead of maintaining bilateral integrations, Dark Matter runs a service network its site says connects more than 16,000 mortgage vendors, so adding a settlement or valuation provider becomes an onboarding step rather than a development project. Published open APIs sit on top for anything the network does not carry. Second only to ICE’s own position, and this is the direct beneficiary of the Encompass SDK retirement.
Adoption and support
20% of scoreThis is where enterprise systems give ground, and Empower is no exception. Depth like this needs a dedicated administration function, a long implementation and configuration governance that never ends. The 2023 carve-out from Black Knight means the support organisation was rebuilt recently, and Dark Matter publishes nothing on implementation duration or service levels. It also runs a second LOS plus legacy Mortgage Builder, so confirm which platform you are being sold.
Return on spend
10% of scoreAt scale the return is real: one point of underwriter productivity on high volume outruns the licence, and Constellation is a long-term holder by design, so you are not repurchasing this platform in three years. Below that scale the arithmetic inverts fast, because a mid-size lender will not use enough of it. No pricing is published, enterprise contracting hides the number until late, and implementation is frequently the larger figure.
On price. Nothing is published. Expect an enterprise structure with a platform component plus per-loan charges. Expect Exchange transactions and Aiva usage to meter separately. Model implementation and internal administration alongside the licence, because at this tier the internal cost routinely matches the vendor fee. Negotiate per-loan tiers against a realistic volume forecast, not a peak year.
