Dark Matter Empower wins 3 of 5 axes. Same rubric, same weights, no sponsorships.

What each platform is sold to do

Empower is pitched as an enterprise origination system spanning consumer, retail and wholesale channels. Dark Matter wraps it inside a wider suite. That suite includes a servicing platform, AIVA virtual assistants and an exchange network. Dark Matter says the network reaches more than 16,000 mortgage vendors. Treat that count as vendor stated and unverified. MeridianLink aims Mortgage at banks, credit unions and independent mortgage banks. Its own page names high origination costs and fragmented workflows as the target.

Ownership, and what it does to your renewal

Both systems changed hands, and the two paths diverge. Dark Matter took Empower from Black Knight after the FTC required ICE to divest it. That settled in August 2023 and closed in September 2023. Constellation Software now owns the business. Constellation buys software and holds it, which usually means steady pricing and thin reinvestment. MeridianLink went private with Centerbridge on 24 October 2025 at $20.00 per share. The deal valued it at $2.0 billion. Sponsor ownership usually means a growth plan and an exit clock.

Continuity, where the two records split hard

Dark Matter has run through three chief executives in roughly two years. Rich Gagliano gave way to Sean Dugan in April 2025. Vikas Rao took over in April 2026. An undisclosed layoff landed in May 2025 and a 5 percent cut followed in April 2026. A May 2025 trade report described large Empower lenders shifting to ICE Encompass. Those lenders wanted servicing tied in tightly. MeridianLink has also moved people, but it kept shipping. It named a chief revenue officer and a chief transformation officer on 1 July 2026. It added Jonathan Corr, formerly of Ellie Mae, to its board in April 2026.

Pricing engines, the sharpest design difference

MeridianLink builds PriceMyLoan into the LOS as a no-fee pricing engine. Its page says the engine combines underwriting, product pricing, fee generation and margin management. It also makes an accuracy claim with no published method behind it. Call that vendor stated and unverified. For a lender paying separately for an outside engine, a bundled one moves cost per loan directly. A no-fee engine also removes a per-lock charge from the loan file. Confirm whether those terms survive renewal. Dark Matter publishes no equivalent bundled engine for Empower. Budget to buy and connect pricing separately.

What the integration lists name, and what they omit

MeridianLink names Blend, nCino, Total Expert, Optimal Blue and Lender Price in its marketplace. It also names DocMagic, Docutech, Snapdocs, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. It sells its own point of sale as MeridianLink Access. It claims hundreds of partner integrations without publishing a count. Dark Matter’s site renders as script and exposes almost nothing to a crawler. Its sitemap lists a single page. Empower marketing talks about open APIs. Its own knowledge base describes integration as one-way push only. That gap belongs in your diligence file. Ask for the field-level mapping document before you sign.

The evidence a buyer can actually check

Empower carries three reviews on G2. It has no Capterra profile and no TrustRadius profile. Three reviews cannot carry a procurement decision. MeridianLink Mortgage carries 36 reviews on G2 at 4.1 out of 5. TrustRadius shows a single review scored 8 out of 10. That is thin too, but it is a usable sample. Neither vendor publishes a status page or an incident history. Ask each for three references running at your loan volume.

Which one to pick

A bank or credit union running consumer lending alongside mortgage should shortlist MeridianLink. One vendor, one bundled pricing engine and core connectors cut administrative overhead. A large independent mortgage bank with heavy servicing ties has a harder call. Empower still fits complex correspondent and wholesale channels. Weigh that against the leadership churn and the reported defections. Neither vendor publishes a price, so ask both for cost per closed loan at your volume. Ask Dark Matter to show a live two-way API write into Empower, not a push. Ask MeridianLink for its PriceMyLoan accuracy testing against an outside engine, with the method attached.

This score rests on evidence anyone can check. It also rests on the vendor's own documentation, pricing, integration pages, and ownership records. We do not claim to run every product ourselves. Nobody can. The rubric was published before this review existed. The vendor did not write this, and no vendor can buy a word of it. Every product in this category is weighted the same way.
