What each system is built to run
ICE sells Encompass as loan manufacturing software for lenders of most shapes and channels. Its mortgage segment booked $557 million in the second quarter of 2026, up 5 percent. Origination technology contributed $197 million of that total.
MeridianLink aims its mortgage LOS at banks, credit unions and independent mortgage banks. The stated targets are high origination costs, fragmented workflows and slow processes. It runs fully in the browser, which removes desktop client maintenance from IT.
The Encompass deadline that changes the math
ICE retires the Encompass software development kit on 31 December 2026. That date already moved once from October 2025. No new SDK features have shipped since 1 November 2025.
Access after the deadline needs special arrangement and carries monthly fees. ICE does not publish those fees anywhere. Get the number in writing before signing a renewal. MeridianLink has published no comparable retirement deadline.
ICE says over 70 percent of service orders already move through Encompass Partner Connect. The remaining share is where the migration bill lands. Vendors serving Encompass lenders have called that rebuild heavy work.
Two ownership stories a buyer should read
Centerbridge Partners took MeridianLink private on 24 October 2025. The deal paid $20.00 per share and valued the company at $2.0 billion. The stock was delisted from the New York Stock Exchange.
In April 2026 MeridianLink named six new directors. One is Jonathan Corr, the former president and chief executive of Ellie Mae. Ellie Mae built Encompass before ICE acquired it. Read that appointment as a statement of intent.
Named partners, and the ones neither will name
MeridianLink builds PriceMyLoan into the LOS and calls it a no-fee pricing engine. That removes one vendor contract and one integration from the stack. It also ties pricing quality to a single supplier.
For outside partners MeridianLink cites hundreds of industry partners and names none on its mortgage page. Ask for the certified list, with a certification date beside each POS, pricing and CRM vendor.
The savings claims and who funded the study
ICE publishes a return of $5 for every $1 spent on Encompass. The figure comes from a MarketWise Advisors study of 171 employees at 147 companies. It is vendor commissioned, so treat the ratio as vendor stated and unverified.
The same study claims $1,056 in extra gross profit per loan. It attributes $592 of that to workflow automation and $304 to staffing efficiency. It also claims closings run three days faster.
MeridianLink reported customer mortgage volume up 38 percent in 2025 against a 19 percent industry figure. It also cited 39 LOS deployments that year, several finished in under 60 days. No method sits behind either number.
The paper trail on price, uptime and reviews
Neither vendor publishes a price. A Capterra listing shows a $20,000 per user per month starting figure for MeridianLink, which the vendor does not confirm. Ask both for fully loaded cost per closed loan at your volume.
Encompass holds 4.0 on Capterra across 42 reviews and 7.9 out of 10 on TrustRadius across 89. Reviewers repeat three complaints: crashes, no autosave and slow loading. A third party monitor logged 16 Encompass incidents since April 2025.
MeridianLink Mortgage shows 4.1 on G2 across 36 reviews. Its Capterra listing shows 4.5 across 15. That is thin evidence for a system that will run your pipeline.
A National Mortgage News survey in summer 2025 polled over 100 lending professionals. Half named Encompass as their primary system. MeridianLink drew notable usage among credit unions and among smaller originators.
Which one to pick
A credit union or community bank under 2,000 loans a year should shortlist MeridianLink. The browser-only build and bundled pricing engine cut administrative overhead fast. A multi-channel independent mortgage bank with heavy custom code has more reason to renew Encompass.
Ask ICE for the written monthly fee for SDK access after 31 December 2026. Ask MeridianLink for its certified partner list and the reference customers behind that 38 percent volume claim.
