Why STRATMOR and Actualize rarely land on the same shortlist
STRATMOR Group and Actualize Consulting are not real competitors in most buying cycles. A lender almost never holds both proposals at once. STRATMOR sells mortgage industry strategy work backed by data it collects itself. Actualize sells financial services process and systems delivery across mortgage, treasury and government work.
One narrow band does overlap. Both firms advise on technology selection for mortgage operations. A lender replacing an origination or secondary marketing platform could reasonably call both. Outside that band the two firms answer completely different questions.
The PGR program and Technology Insight are STRATMOR’s real product
STRATMOR’s distinguishing asset is proprietary peer data. The Peer Group Roundtables program, known as PGR, has run since 1998. STRATMOR operates it jointly with the Mortgage Bankers Association. Participating lenders submit production and servicing detail. Staff from both organizations review submissions for completeness and consistency. Members then meet off site to discuss results with their peer group.
The Technology Insight Study runs on a separate track. It surveys lenders on satisfaction with point of sale, origination, CRM and ancillary systems. It produces a loyalty measure for each system covered, which STRATMOR calls the Lender Loyalty Score. Other data products include Compensation Connection, MortgageCX and a secret shopper program. STRATMOR also runs a Solution Provider Advisory practice aimed at vendors rather than lenders.
Actualize brings a mortgage and fixed income delivery practice
Actualize Consulting was founded in 2003 by Chad Wekelo and works from Reston, Virginia. It maintains offices in the United States, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom and Malaysia. Practices span business process, finance transformation, reporting and analytics, software implementation and vendor selection. A separate government practice serves federal and state agencies.
The mortgage and fixed income group is the piece that matters here. Published offerings cover enterprise information management, digital mortgage, integrated disclosures and MERS. Capital markets work covers risk management oversight and collateral management. That collateral work spans both operations and regulatory reporting. This is delivery bench work rather than board level strategy.
STRATMOR runs an M&A desk that Actualize does not match
STRATMOR maintains a mortgage M&A practice covering valuations, target analysis, due diligence and deal modeling. It also handles culture assessment, negotiation support and post close integration. Commercial due diligence for buyers of mortgage assets sits in the same group. Actualize publishes no comparable buy side or sell side transaction practice.
Actualize instead publishes vendor selection and software implementation as named services. STRATMOR’s technology work sits nearer the front of that same process. A buyer could plausibly use STRATMOR to choose a system and Actualize to install it. That sequencing is the one scenario where both quotes appear on one desk.
MISMO credentials at Actualize, survey method at STRATMOR
Actualize holds MISMO Certified Consultant designations. Those cover residential origination, servicing, secondary market and technology implementation. Technology strategic planning is also covered. Its TransformX data utility carries MISMO product certification. TransformX translates legacy data files and maps them to the MISMO reference model.
STRATMOR publishes no equivalent standards credential. Its credibility rests on survey method and roundtable governance instead. Neither firm posts full sample sizes or response rates behind published figures. Ask for the method document before quoting any number from either firm.
No rate card is posted by either advisory firm
Neither STRATMOR nor Actualize posts a public price. That is normal for advisory firms and should not alarm a buyer. It does mean the buyer carries the burden of defining scope tightly.
Ask both firms for a written statement of work with named staff on it. Ask for a rate card by title and an hour range for each phase. Ask who actually shows up after the pitch meeting ends. Third party directories circulate revenue and headcount estimates for Actualize. Those figures come from data aggregators and are unverified.
Which one to pick
An independent mortgage banker benchmarking cost per loan against peers should call STRATMOR Group. Ask STRATMOR which peer group you would be placed in and how many companies report into it. That single answer tells you whether the comparison will mean anything.
A lender or servicer rebuilding data flows between systems should call Actualize Consulting. Ask Actualize to name the consultants who would staff your MISMO mapping work. Then ask for their prior engagements by name. A named bench beats a logo slide every time.
Both tools are scored on the same weighted rubric, production impact carries the most weight. Comparisons are never sponsored. Disclosure →
